This 101-page report was issued by the Governor’s Commission on the Los Angeles Riots to “make an objective and dispassionate study of the Los Angeles Riots.” The riots were triggered by a traffic stop for a drunken driving offense and lasted for six chaotic days. The violence resulted in 34 deaths, over 1,000 injuries, and $40 million in property damage. The report addresses some of the causes and makes recommendations for designing programs to support both African-American and Latino minorities. Accompanying the text are 8 photographic plates illustrating the riots, 4 of which are in color, and a folding map housed in a rear pocket. The detailed street map shows the riot area around Watts with a color-coded legend identifying damaged, looted and destroyed businesses, damaged and destroyed public buildings, and deaths (including 3 first-responders).
