"Story Map of France",

This charming pictorial map gives over 100 visual reasons to visit France. A cartouche at right lists "Distinguished Citizens Born in Paris," including artists, musicians, scientists, and explorers. The elaborate border incorporates imagery from 17th century tapestries from the style of Louis XV and 18th century ornaments by Robert de Cotte. Despite the whimsical imagery, the map includes a reminder of the Great War and perhaps foreshadowing of World War II. Blood-red lines indicate the "Germans Farthest Advance" and the "Final Battle Line" from World War I. Nearby fly the flag of Nazi Germany and what appear to be lines of cheval de frise crossing the German countryside. Created by A. Walker and W.E. Vogelear and published in Chicago by Colortext Publications, which created a series of Story Maps between 1935-50.
