Early and Rare Road Atlas of Connecticut

"[Atlas - Early Automobile Road Maps of Connecticut]",

This small atlas presents the early road network in Connecticut including an index map of the state and 13 sectional maps. Each contains a legend identifying “Best Automobiling Roads” (red line), Fair Roads (dotted red line), Other Roads (black), and railroads. A few roads are noted as numbered, but the overwhelming majority are unmarked. Published by the Survey Map Company which was founded by Anthon L. Westgard, a largely overlooked auto pioneer called the “Pathfinder” for his early work to identify and actually test various routes for auto travel when many roads were ill-suited for automobiles. He worked closely with the American Automobile Association to create and publish their earliest road maps, beginning in 1905. We found no past sales record for this atlas, though the maps appear to be similar to one listing on OCLC (#40836197) with one location (New York Public Library). Printed wrappers with eyelet binding (11.4 x 6.3").
