This elegantly designed pictorial map by George Annand spans the Hudson Valley from New York City north to Glens Falls. The region is covered in charming illustrations highlighting the history, culture, and attractions. There are portraits of Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Alexander Hamilton, and Martin Van Buren; a vignette of Ichabod Crane fleeing the Headless Horseman; images of West Point, Vassar, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and illustrations of various historical houses, the first steam-powered passenger train, Burgoyne's surrender at the Battle of Saratoga, and much more. The ornate title cartouche incorporates portraits of Henry Hudson, Thomas Donegan, and George Clinton. Text panels at left and right provide more information about the region. Part of a loose series of 9 "romance maps," which included notable contributions by educated women with an interest in American history. Compiled by Marguerite Hess Parrish, with contributions from historical research consultant Josephine Wilhelm Wickser.
