243. Africa (Carte Generale de LAfrique), A.H. Brue, Paris, 1828. 19.75 x 14.25". (OC) Fine copper engraved map on heavy paper with wide margins and royal seal under the script title. Very detailed coastline and quite a bit of detail in parts of the interior with some question marks noting those regions about which little is known. Keyboard style border. A very attractive map. Overall fine condition except for some damp stain in margins, which are sufficiently wide that is doesnt matter. (A+) $ 250

Algeria, Bedouin Arab Encampment, Bosjesman Hottentots (Wild Bushmen), St. Helena, and

(BW) A Ptolemaic map covering the north coast of Africa including Egypt and the Nile River. Mountains, rivers and lakes cover the map and the sea is stippled in the Italian engraving style. Minor toning on fold. (A) $ 150

(BW) Covers the region of present day Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Also includes Sardinia
and Sicily. The stipple engraved sea includes an oared ship and a sea monster. Tiny

1640. 19.7 x 15". (FC) Highly decorative map of Morocco oriented with north on the
right. Five sailing ships, including two engaged in battle. The large title cartouche is
flanked by two dancing devil-like creatures. Fine original color. Faint areas of toning,

Orbis Terrarum, Cologne, ca. 1600. 19 x 13". (FC) Striking birds-eye view
of the city and surrounding countryside, including depictions of the Pyramids. Several
people in the foreground including an cavalry engaged in exercises, travelers on the roads
and a man picking dates. Some faint damp stain in margins, tiny marginal tears,

.), Braun & Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum,
Cologne, ca. 1575. 16.2 x 12.5". (FC) Fabulous view of the city of Tunis from the
sea, complete with a full scale siege in progress. Lovely impression and color. Barely
noticeable minor abrasion on centerfold, else fine. (A) $350 reserve. Illustrated at left.

Western Africa (Guinea), J. Jansson, Amsterdam, ca. 1636. 15 x 20.5". (FC)
Elegantly engraved map with fine original coloring. Covers the coast from Sierra Leone to
Gabon. The land is filled with elephants, lions, leopards and monkeys and the sea with
sailing ships, sea monsters, and compass roses. The highlight of this map is the large
title cartouche surrounded with natives, monkeys, birds and two little black cherubs
carrying a large elephant tusk. Faint uneven toning, & small bit missing from margin.

254. Western Africa (Partie Occidentale de lAncien Continent, edpuis Lisbonne jusqua la Riviere de Sierra Leona), R. Bonne, Paris, ca. 1780. 8.2 x 12.5". (BW) Depicts the coastline from Melilla to Sierra Leone with the Cape Verde and Canary Islands. Fine crisp copper engraving. Minor browning and a tiny wormhole on fold, else clean and bright. (B) $ 35

vignettes of Christiansborg, Cape Coast Castle, Sierra Leone, Bakel and a coin, all
enclosed in a finely engraved decorative border. Faint foxing along centerfold, else very

256. Central Africa (Aethiopia Superior vel Interior: vulgo Abissinorum
sive Presbiteri Joannis Imperium), Blaeu, Grand Atlas, Amsterdam, ca.
1627-45. 19.5 x 15". (OC) Splendid map of eastern & central Africa. The map
depicts the legendary Christian Kingdom of Prester John. Fabled rivers & many exotic
animals fill the otherwise empty spaces of the unexplored interior. There is a fair amount
of detail on the eastern coast, reflecting the Portuguese and Arab trading interests.
Mogadishu, Mombassa, Quiloa [Kilwa] and Mozambique are shown as major towns. Below the
equator there are two large lakes which are the source of the Nile River. Much else of
interest in. Fully colored (original) figurative title cartouche and scale of miles. Even

(OC) Very detailed map with several insets including a large one titled Extremite Sud de lAfrique ou Colonie du Cap, Pays des Hottentots et des Brejouanas. Other insets include the archipelago of Madagascar, Mascareignes Islands and numerous other small islands. Two large columns of French text and several other textual notations throughout. Copper engraved on fine, heavy paper with very wide margins. A couple of minor spots in margin, still fine. (A+) $ 150
258. Southern Africa (Cape Colony), John Tallis, London, ca. 1850. 12.5 x 9.7". (OC) Detailed map surrounded in a decorative border and including vignettes of the Entrance to the Knysna, Grahams Town, Cape Town, natives and a lion. A couple of tiny spots on fold, else very good. (B) $ 120
259. Southern Africa (Natal and Kaffraria), Tallis, London, ca. 1850. 9.5 x 13.7". (OC) Covers the region of Fredricksburg to Delagoa Bay. Finely engraved border and large vignettes of Port Natal and Town of Durban, and Entrance to Port Natal. Bit of very faint foxing. (B) $ 110
