83-216.JPG (63647 bytes)216. Asia (Asiae Nova Descriptio), Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, ca. 1574. 19 x 14.5". (FC) Fine, handsome map of the continent which extends to include Japan and much of South East Asia. The map is drawn on a cordiform projection which resulted in the continent extending too far east. It was compiled directly by Ortelius, who referenced the Gastaldi (1559) and Mercator (1569) maps as well as Portuguese portolan charts for source material. Generally the continent follows the Gastaldi model. However, Japan is depicted in the manner of Ruscelli, from apparently Jesuit sources. Luzon is absent from the Philippine archipelago. Large strapwork cartouche and attractive original color. Oxidation of green color which has been professionally de-acidified and tissue backed. Overall very good paper and condition. (BW) Fine copper engraved map including all of continental Asia, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia as well as much of western Africa. A huge region of present day Russia is noted as Parts Yet Undiscovered. The sea between Korea and Japan is unnamed. Four cartouches decorate the map including one which dedicates the map to William Duke of Gloucester who was a pupil of Well’s at Oxford. A couple of small printer’s creases, some tiny worm holes and a small puncture on fold (with no loss of image). The fine, dark impression more than compensate for these minor defects. Western Asia (An Exact Map of the Crim, (Formerly TAURICA CHERSONESUS) Part of Lesser Tartary, The Sea of ASOPH, and the adjacent Country of Kuban Tartars; as laid down by the Czarina’s Geographers; exhibiting the March of the Russian Armies against the Crim Tartars, in the War begun with the Turks 1736, and continued the present Year 1739), Anon., Gentleman’s Magazine, London, 1739. 12.5 x 8.7". (BW) Detailed and handsome map in an older style. Filled with place names, 31 are located by keyed legend at bottom of map. GENT-3. (A) $ 45

219. Asia (L’Asie), R. Bonne, Paris, ca. 1780. 12.5 x 8.2". (BW) Fine map of the continent including Japan, Philippines, Indonesia and northern tip of Australia. Crisp copper engraving with tradewinds depicted. Tiny worm hole on centerfold, else fine & bright. (B) $ 60

220. Asia (Asie), Buy de Mornas, Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie, Paris, [1790]. 10 x 11.5". (FC) Crisp impression on a full sheet (19.5"x13") of hand laid paper with French text at the sides. Lovely original coloring including blue wash in the seas. Includes all of Asia: Russia, Siberia, China and Southeast Asia. Australia is labeled Partie du Continent inconnu and is attached to New Guinea. The sea between Japan and Korea is name the M. du Coree. A handsome sheet in near mint condition. (A+) $ 150

221. Asia (Asia , from the Modern Travelers, and most recent works.), LeSage, ca. 1820. 13.2 x 12.2". (FC) Very interesting map of the whole of Asia and including the East Indies. The map is covered with fascinating notations concerning topography, history and commerce. The map is surrounded by English text on a large folio sheet, similar to a Carey & Lea map. Several marginal tears, all outside text and image, else fine. (A) $ 100

222. Asia (Carte Generale de L’Asie), A.H. Brue, Paris, 1820. 29.75 x 14". (OC) Fine copper engraved map of the continent & Japan, on heavy paper with wide margins and royal seal beside the script title. Nice detail throughout. Keyboard style border. Small stain in margin, overall very fine. (A+) $ 200

223. Near and Middle East (Alexandri Magni Imperium Et Expeditio per Africam et potissimum per Aslam), J. B. Nolin, ca. 1720. 10.25 x 8.25". (FC) Nice copper engraved map of Alexander’s Empire stretching from the Balkans to Afghanistan and from Lybia to Pakistan. Many ancient place names. Crisp impression on fine laid paper. (A+) $ 75

83-224: A Plan of Constantinope...224. Turkey (A Plan of Constantinople, places adjacent and Canal of the Black Sea), John Lodge, Gentleman’s Magazine, London, 1770. 9.3 x 6.7". (BW) Overhead plan view with terrific detail down to individual trees, plowed fields, and buildings. Extensive keyed legend identifies 75 places and buildings on the plan. Elaborate cartouche features military swords, other weapons, flags, & a jeweled turban. GENT-204. (A+)  Click thumbnail for full image. $125-150

(BW) Panoramic, woodblock view of Jerusalem (as seen from the east, possible drawn after Sebastian Munster’s 1550 view. Below the print and on verso is an interesting description of the city in French text. Fine impression, trimmed to neatlines on both sides, as issued. Some very light toning on paper edges and small area of worming on fold at bottom, well outside text and image. Rare & early print. (A) Illustrated above. $ 700-750

226. Holy Land (Simeon), Fuller, Pisgah Sight of Palestine, [1650]. 12.7 x 10.5". (BW) Fascinating copper engraved map filled with Biblical illustration. Covers the region from Gaza to Ashdod and inland to Hebron. Fancy title cartouche and scale of miles with figures make this a fine illustrative map. (A+) $ 350

Richly decorated with encampments, armies and a depiction of the wanderings of the Israelites including Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. Two decorative cartouches further embellish the map. (BW) Copper engraved map with considerable detail throughout. Includes all of Turkey, Arabia and most of Iran as well as most of Egypt. Title cartouche with figures and a camel and a compass rose. (BW) Extremely decorative map of the Kingdom of the Great Khan. Covers northern Russia, China, and a very early depiction of Japan which is located just off the American shore. Cartographically important because it includes ONE OF THE EARLIEST DEPICTIONS OF NORTHWESTERN AMERICA including the peninsula of California. Latin text on verso (half sheet). Ref: Moreland & Bannister, p.269; Wagner (NW) 81; Wheat (TM) 16; and Walter (Japan) 11E. Fine crisp impression, minor toning. (A+) Click thumbnail for full-size image. $ 1000-1250

83-231.jpg (88480 bytes)231. Northern Asia (Tartaria), Hondius, Mercator/Hondius Atlas, Amsterdam, ca. 1606. 19.5 x 13.5". (OC) Splendid example of Hondius’ fine engraving style. Covers all of northern Asia from Moscow to the Anian Fretum, Korea is an island and there is no Japan depicted. Depicts the newly discovered Nova Zembla, the mythological lands of Gog & Magog, and the Great Wall of China. Three large strapwork cartouches, two costumed men and a large encampment decorate the map. Some color transfer from another map on verso, short marginal split, else very good. (A) $575 reserve. (OC) Steel engraved map surrounded by a decorative border and including vignettes of Skorskarskoi Pagost, Troitsk, Kamtchatkan dogs and a large bear attacking two men and their dogs. An attractive map. Tiny split on centerfold, repaired with archival tape. (A) $ 125

(BW) Detailed copper engraving of the southern tip of India, Sri Lanka with the Maldives and Andaman Islands. Arrows depict the direction and months of tradewinds. Light offsetting which can be removed with a fine soft eraser. (A) $ 40

Covers from Eqypt to Indonesia as far as Java with a large inset of the western Mediterranean Sea centering on Greece. Also includes two circular insets; one of the north pole and another titled Annonis Periplus. A very graphic and unusual map in fine full color. Beautifully engraved including a fully stippled sea. (FC) Colorful map covering India, through Thailand and to Singapore. Insets of The Island & Town of Bombay, Madras and Its Suburbs and Calcutta. Strapwork border with a fine vignette of the Government-House & Treasury, Calcutta. (A+) $ 30

240. Philippines (Carte Hydrographique & Chorographiques des Isles Philippines), Homann Heirs, Nuremberg, 1760. 21.2 x 18.2". (FC) Sheet one only of a 2 sheet map. This sheet covers most of the island of Luzon including Manila. Large decorative title cartouche (uncolored) and a fine compass rose embellish the map. Small area of light foxing. (B) $ 300

241. East Indies (The East Indies Drawn from the latest Discoveries), T. Jefferys, Gentleman’s Magazine, London, [1748]. 10.2 x 9". (BW) Well engraved and crisply printed. Extends from India to Japan and south to New Holland. The sea between Cape York Peninsula and New Guinea is undefined and the two are connected via a dotted line. Large and attractive cartouche. Shows tracks of explorers and galleons. GENT-59. Toned and stained. Close trimmed at top and right side. (C) $ 60
