Below the elaborate title cartouche (in full original color), with the Royal Spanish arms, is located Mexico City situated on a large lake. Several gold and silver mines are located in the central region. A sailing ship, sea monster and two armadillos further decorate the map. Minor old crease, else fine. (A) $575 reserve. (FC) Handsome map extending from the Isla Margarita in the northwest to the coast of northern Brazil near Sao Luis east of the Amazon delta. The map locates at its center a large inland sea, Parime Lacus, on whose northwestern shore lies the fabled city Manoa, o el Dorado, or the golden city of the Incas. The search for this city led many explorers, including Sir Walter Raleigh, on wild adventures through the jungles. The map is beautifully decorated with three cartouches, ships, sea battles, monsters and a fine compass rose. Lightly toned on folds, else fine. 161. North Atlantic (Estotilandia et Laboratoris Terra), Wytfliet, Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum, Louvain, ca. 1597. 11.5 x 9". (BW) From the first printed atlas relating exclusively to America. This is an important and influential map depicting the first detailed record of the discoveries of Davis and Frobisher in their search for the Northwest Passage. The attractive map has a stipple engraved sea and a decorative title cartouche. It is centered on the Davis Strait and depicts much of Greenland, Labrador, Iceland as well as the mythical island of Frisland (complete with many cities and place names). Fine crisp impression.
