411. Gentlemen’s Magazine XIX London, 1749. 8vo. Complete bound volume with all plates and eight maps, 3 folding, including a plan of London & Westminster, St. Petersburg, South America. Also a very nice section on heraldry, complete with illustrations. Recently rebound in a superb binding of fine burgundy leather spine and corners, marble-paper boards and gilt lettering on spine. Some professional repairs on some plates, else generally fine. Maps are Jolley Ref: Gent-61 through 68. (A+) $ 600-700

412. The Town and Country Magazine of Universal Repository of Knowledge, Instruction and Entertainment. Vol. XIII, London, 1781. 8vo. Fascinating volume filled with news of the AMERICAN REVOLUTION including the surrender of Cornwallis, arguments against continuing the war, lengthy articles on the manner of making war among the Indians of America. Folding map A Plan of the Town of St. Helier in the Island of Jersey, repaired with small section of loss. Many fine engravings. Cloth, quarter leather with gold embossed spine and marbling at edges. 413. The Observator, London, Apr. 22, 1682. Written in the form of a dialogue between a Whig and a Tory, with logic and reason weighted on the side of the latter. Front page - The Solemn Protestration of Miles Prance, in reference to the Murder of Sir Edmond Godfrey, and concerning the publisher, Roger L’Estrange. Single sheet, printed both sides. (A) $50

414. The London Gazette, Sept. 15 - 19, 1692. Front page filled with two Proclamations by the King and Queen. One for the "better Discovery of Seditious Libellers (sic)"; the other "for the Discovery and Apprehending of Highway Men and Robbers." Offsetting. (B) $ 75

415. The London Gazette, Aug. 10 - 14, 1693. Front page Proclamation by the King and Queen "For the preventing of the Stealth and Imbezilment (sic) of Their Majesties Stores of Wars" is a detailed discussion on special marks to be applied to all sort of merchandise. (A) $ 70

416. The British Apollo, Or, Curious Amusements for the Ingenious..., London, Nov. 24-26, 1708. In Question and Answer. Some poetry. Back page news of the War of the Spanish Succession - Fighting in present-day Belgium. Curious adverts. 4pp. Light staining in margins, paper sound. (B) $ 30

417. The Tattler, London, May 16-18, 1710. Addison and Steele’s famous coffee house paper. Interesting back page advs., such as Wines for Sale at Lloyd’s Coffee-house (Forerunner of Lloyd’s of London) - Adv. offers a Two Guinea Reward for a Lost White Spaniel Bitch - Adv. for the Famous Cholick Water that cures Stomach problems. 418. The Spectator, London, May 10, 1712. Another of Addison and Steele’s coffee house papers. Quaint back page advs. - By Her Majesty’s Company of Comedians, At the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane - Another for the Queen’s Theatre in the Hay-Market - Auction Sale of Paintings by Raphael, Vandyke, etc. Toned near edge not affecting text. 419. The Guardian, London, May 9, 1713. Started by Richard Steele with the help of Joseph Addison and other friends--Pope being one of the contributors. Curious back page advs. for books just published such as Dryden’s Fables, Milton’s Paradise Regained, the Fourth Edition of Cato, a Tragedy by Mr. Addison. Single sheet, printed both sides. Overall light toning with some light foxing. (B) $ 35

420. The London Gazette, August 21- 24, 1714. The world’s oldest continuously printed paper. Single sheet with 2 paragraphs on front related to the death of Queen Anne and ascension of King George I. Full issue with much news from around the world, adverts, etc. (A) $ 60

421. Votes of the House of Commons, London, Mar. 10, 1715. Several Resolves of Parliament including one on front page pertaining to His Majesty’s Mints, another on the continuance of duties on Malt, Rum, Cyder, and Sherry through June of next year. Single sheet, printed both sides. Fine condition. (A) $ 40

422. The True Briton, London, Nov. 1, 1723. Started by the young Duke of Wharton, a reckless supporter of the Pretender, as part of a journalistic crusade against the Government. Partial back page Half Penny Tax Stamp printed in red (only the very top missing). Front page Letter-Block. Single sheet, printed both sides. Mint. (A+) $ 40

423. The London Chronicle or Universal Evening Post, March 20 - 23, 1762. Much reporting of Major Gen. Monckton’s actions including the full "Articles of Capitulation of the Citadel of Fort Royal, in the Island of Martinico." Occasional scattered foxing. (B) $ 35

424. The London Chronicle or Universal Evening Post, March 11 - 13, 1762. Report from Charlestown, South Carolina on the departure of Lieut. Colonel Grant’s troops from the harbour. The convoy, under his ships Dover and Zephir, had been wind-bound for some weeks with the 40th regiment and four companies of the Royal (Gen. St. Clair’s Second) battalion. (A) $ 35

425. The Independent Chronicle…, Boston, Jan. 26, 1795; and Columbian Centinel, Boston, Nov. 11, 1797; and The Connecticut Courant, Hartford, Aug. 12, 1799. Too much to list, so here are the highlights: first is an early National paper: Proceedings of the Massachusetts Legislature and of the Federal Legislature - Peace in Europe, wood block of African lion in advert. The second: French Affairs - Declaration against the Emperor - much more related to France. Third: Passage of the Rhine by the Austrians - Defeat of McDonald’s Army. Inside news of the U.S. frigate General Green and of Capt. Christopher Perry, father of Matthew Perry. Toned with scattered foxing. Together, three papers. (B) $ 50

426. Portsmouth Oracle, New Hampshire, Oct. 11, 1806; Columbian Centinel, Boston, June 13, 1807; and Essex Register, Salem, MA, June 21, 1809. Three issues pertaining to Aaron Burr. First with a story on his efforts to sever the Western states from the Union. The second is on The Trial of Co. Burr in Richmond, Va. and the calling of the Grand Jury. The last pertains to Burr and Miranda in an enterprise against the Spanish colonies in South America. First with short edge tears, all toned and some scattered foxing. Lot of 3 papers. (B) $ 35

Three issues containing numerous SLAVE ADVERTISEMENTS such as…For Sale: Two likely, healthy young Women, slaves for life - $600 Reward for four runaway Negro Men. Light foxing, creases on first. 429. Niles’ Weekly Register, Balto., Oct. 15, 1814; Columbian Centinel, Boston, Nov. 19, 1814; New York Herald, July 12, 1815. Three issues with great news of the Navy’s involvement in the War of 1812. First is on Macom’s Victory - Battle of Plattsburg on Lake Champlain. Second on Events of the War on Lake Superior - On the Niagara - Brilliant Cruise of the Wasp - War in the Cheaspeake - Destruction of the British brig of war Avon by the U.S. sloop Wasp. Third has a letter from Com. Decatur on capture of the U.S. frigate President, but the British squadron - Minutes of the Action Between the British Ship Endymion and the U.S. Frigate President. 430. Maine Farmer and Journal of the Useful Arts, Winthrop, June 24, 1836; New York Spectator, Mar. 13, 1844; Boston Cultivator, Sept. 13, 1845. Three TEXAS issues. The first with news of Santa Anna being landed from the Texan schooner Independence and conveyed by land to Velesco - news of Gen. Houston at New Orleans, suffering from his wounds. Second reports on the Texan Senate paying compliments to Pres. Houston - Commodore Moore to be tried by a Court Marshall, and talk of Annexation. Third on Military movements in Corpus Christi - Provision for Slaves in the Texas Convention - Capt. Hays pursues the Mexicans near Castroville. Last is foxed. Three issues. (B) $ 45

First with a long letter from Special Texas Indian Agent Neighbours from Torrey’s Trading House on the favorable condition of the Indians. Second contains short ftpg. headlines on the Sioux Indian War in Minnesota with Three Battles Fought by Gen. Sibley. Third with reports from Fort Dodge, Iowa on Indian Murders. Three issues.
