83-028.JPG (85190 bytes)28. North America (A New Map of North America According to the Newest Observations), H. Moll, London, [1708]. 9.7 x 7". (BW) Copper engraved map with CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND, New Albion in the north. Of equal interest is the inland lake in the west shown with Many Villages on the Islands. The entire northwest is labeled Parts Unknown. Bit of browning in margins, map fine with a crisp, clean image. (A) $375 reserve.  Click on thumbnail for fullsized image. $450-475

83-029.jpg (64897 bytes)29. North America (L’Amerique Septentrionale Suivant les Nouvelles Observations), Pierre Vander Aa, Leiden, ca. 1714. 11.7 x 8.7". (FC) Scarce map of North America and the West Indies. Interesting depiction of California which is ambiguous about whether it is an island or not. The Gulf of California is left open ended. The large title cartouche (uncolored) is flanked by Neptune and two Native Americans. One tiny light spot in map and a couple in margin, overall fine. (A) See full size image. $ 725-800

83-030.JPG (59992 bytes)30. North America (Carte Generale des Decouvertes de l’Amiral de Fonte), Thomas Jefferys, Diderot’s Encyc., London, 1768/72. 15 x 11.2". (BW) This fascinating map is a French version of a pre-Cook map drawn by Jefferys, a Northwest Passage enthusiast. It depicts the la grande probabilite d’un Passage au Nord Quest with its western entrance as described by Juan de Fuca in 1592 and in the fictitious story of Bartholomew de Fonte’s discoveries in 1640. It also shows Russian and French explorations. Alaska is beginning to take shape. One of the most significant Northwest Passage maps. Ref: Portinaro & Knirsch, plt. CLIX. 83-031.JPG (62458 bytes)31. North America (Amerique Septentrionale), Anon., Paris, ca. 1790. 8.5 x 7.2". (OC) Interesting small copper engraved map. Alaska is not completely shown but there is a R. de Cook where Cook Inlet is. There is a large western lake (Lac Pikes) from which the R. de l’Quest flows. The United States is confined east of the Mississippi River with the rest of the continent divided between Louisiane, Nouveau Mexique and N’le Albion. Pleasing but probably later color. Minor abrasion on one fold, else clean and bright. (A)  Click thumbnail for full image. $ 275

32. North America, northwestern (A Chart of the Nth West Coast of America & the Nth East Coast of Asia...), Morse/Gridley, Boston, ca. 1802. 11.2 x 7.2". (BW) Finely engraved map of the region including Siberia, Alaska, and east to Hudson Bay. Shows the Discoveries that have been lately made. Folded as issued, on fine hand-laid paper. (B) $ 120

33. North America (North America From the Best Authorities), Brooks, ca. 1807. 9.25 x 7.75". (BW) Interesting little map of the 83-033.JPG (72678 bytes)continent with the West Indies. Alaska is still a bit misshapen but there are several place names up to C. Lisbon. The River of the West is shown connecting into the Mississippi River system. Lightly toned. 34. North America (Carte Generale de L’Amerique Septentrionale, et des Iles qui en Dependent…), A.H. Brue, Paris, 1828. 19.7 x 14.2". (OC) Handsome map of North America and the West Indies. Beautifully engraved on fine heavy paper with a royal seal below script title. Alaska is Amerique Russe and still a bit misshapen. The United States is shown in control of much of present day British Columbia. The individual state borders are shown up to the Mississippi River, with Missouri and Arkansas Territories and a huge Oregon Territory. Mexico is still in control of Texas and the Southwest. Very fine original outline color complete with color key, surrounded by keyboard style border. (A+) $ 450-500

35. North America (Amerique du Nord), Dufour, Atlas Universel, Paris, 1860. 22 x 29.5". (OC) Very large & fine steel engraved map with great topographical detail. The U.S. state boundaries are depicted up to the states just west of the Mississippi and Texas. The western states and territories are named but the boundaries are not delineated. Alaska is Russie Amerique and there is a large inset of the Aleutian Islands. A very attractive large map. (A+) $ 300
