The following five lots are very early copper engraved scenes from Theodore de Bry’s Grand Voyages or Petits Voyages. This collection of early voyages (published between 1598 and 1634) are among the first accounts of the New World. They are considered one of the most important of their kind; often the first view of America available to Europeans.

Great scene of French explorers being received by the Floridian King Ovade in his village on a river filled with large crocodiles. The explorers came to beg for provisions, which were generously provided by the Indians. Tear in margin, just affecting some text, professionally repaired. Image fine. (A) $275 reserve. 83-268268. IIII. 8.5 x 6.2". (BW) From a German edition of the Grand Voyages. A scene of two French sailing ships on the coast of Florida where they have discovered five rivers which they named Charene, Garonne, Gironde, Belum and Magnum. Two oared boats full of explorers and a fierce sea monster complete the scene. Small marginal tear, professionally repaired and well outside text. 83-269269. XXVI. 8.5 x 6". (BW) Fascinating scene of native Floridians hunting deer by hiding themselves in deer-hides and sneaking up on the unsuspecting animals as they drink from a stream. From a German edition of the Grand Voyages concerning the French exploration of Florida. Couple of tiny marginal tears, professionally repaired. 270. XXVI. 8.5 x 6". (BW) From a German edition of the Grand Voyages with the French in Florida. This is a great view of crocodile hunting. A partial translation includes "Grasping a pointed tree trunk ten or twelve feet long, they advance towards the animal, who usually crawls along with open mouth, and when he opens his mouth they quickly plunge the thinnest part of the pole into it in such a way that he cannot get it out because of the roughness and irregularity of the bark. Turning the crocodile over, they then pound and pierce his belly, which is the softest part of his body, with blows from clubs and arrows." Couple of small, light spots and a printer’s crease on left edge. Couple of marginal tears, professionally repaired. (B) $325 reserve. $ 400-450

The following lots are hand-colored lithographs of the Crimean War. They were published by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co., Publishers to Her Majesty, London, 1855, and are part of the Colnghis’ Authentic Series from drawings by W. Simpson. Lithography by Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen. Each is printed on very heavy card-stock type paper with registration holes evident at each corner to insure the limestone blocks were held in perfect alignment during printing. Each image is very finely rendered and beautifully hand-colored, which is very rare for this edition of prints. Old library stamp on verso.

285. The Camp of the Second Division, Looking East, January 1855. 7.2 x 11.2". Wintery scene of the large encampment. (A) $ 70

The following lots are tinted lithographs (approximately 6.5 x 9.5") from Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan by Adm. Mathew Perry, published in 1856. This was the first American expedition to Japan and provided the outside world with some of the first official views of the people and countryside.

The following seven lots are lovely fashion plates from La Mode Illustree published in Paris. Each is on a page measuring 9.5 x 14". They are superb steel engravings with very fine hand-coloring.

The following five lots are tinted lithographs published in the Comprehensive Atlas & Geography of the World, by Blackie & Son, London, in 1884. Each print contains a view of several types of individuals in native costume. Most also show the type of housing in the background. Each is approximately 10 x 7" with the scene and title (including ethnic identification of each individual) enclosed in a decorative border.

The following ten lots are chromolithographs from a 1892 edition of George Catlin’s The Manners, Customs and Condition of the North American Indians written during Eight Years Travel Amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America, 1832-39. Catlin was an American artist and traveler who devoted himself to using his art to illustrate the customs of the American Indian. He painted over 600 pictures of Indians and their cultural life from 48 tribes. Each print measures approximately 7 x 5".

Two from the series Industry and Idleness, 2 from The Rake’s Progress and 1 of The March to Finchley. All filled with interesting detail and humorous individuals. (A+) $ 75

351. Miscellaneous (Lot of 3 art prints), Art Journal, London, [1854-78]. 10 x 7". (BW) Fine steel engravings all with a pastoral subject matter. These engravings are all after famous 19th century paintings. Includes Peace, after Sir E. Landseer (Scene of a shepherd’s family with its flock on a plateau overlooking the ocean); The Pet of the Common after J.C. Horsley (Three adorable children playing with a baby donkey); and Returning Home after R.H. Gerard (A group of farm children returning from the fields with a small wagon pulled by a dog). 352. Miscellaneous (Lot of four etchings), P.G. Hamerton, London, ca. 1861. 6 x 3". (BW) Fine set of etchings by the British artist and critic. He wrote many articles and books and is best remembered for Etching and Etchers, 1868 and The Portfolio, 1870-92 which included many of his own etchings. There are two landscapes of an unknown river, a pleasant scene of cattle resting beneath an old oak tree, and a nice rendering of a sleeping spaniel dog. (A+) $ 80

(BW) Nice set of fine photogravures: Aesop Narrating his Fables, A Family of Satyrs, Sarpedon Carried to Jupiter from the Plain of Troy by Sleep and Death, Nymphs Bathing, and Hylas and the Water-Nymphs. (PC) Characture print, by the famous SPY, of Bret Harte, the notable American author of the short poem "The Heathen Chinee". Complete with the sheet of description to accompany the print. His inventions include the Maxim automatic rifle and early flying machines. Includes the accompanying article which has been pasted onto verso. (A) $ 75

(PC) Five interesting ethnic prints; 3 of antique pipes and 2 of arrowheads, from this important book by Henry Schoolcraft. (A+) $ 90

(PC) Very unusual chromolithograph with the Lord’s Prayer in a center oval which is surrounded by a wreath with vignettes illustrating the Ten Commandments. Beautifully printed with bright pastel colors & gold. Would be stunning framed. Acid burn on verso, with even toning & one short tear just entering image, repaired with archival tape.
