This map appeared as the frontispiece to Journal of a Voyage of Discovery to the Arctic Regions..., a chronicle of William Edward Parry's 1818 voyage along the coast of Baffin Bay under the command of Captain John Ross, published in 1819. It spans from Great Slave Lake to the western coast of Greenland. Much of the map is unengraved, but the track of Parry's ship the Alexander is traced in Baffin Bay, and there are plenty of place names around the northern part of Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait. A note locates The Sea According to Hearne. During this voyage Parry became convinced that Baffin Bay would lead to the Northwest Passage. Upon returning, Captain Ross was chastised by the Admiralty for turning back too soon, so Parry was given the command of the Hecla along with Lieutenant Matthew Liddon commanding the Griper for their voyage of 1819. Parry's expedition penetrated far into the potential passage, which led to Parry being hailed as a hero and promoted to commander in 1820. He proved that wintering over in the Arctic was possible and gained much knowledge of the Inuit, but was never successful in completing the passage due to the ice. Engraved by Neele and Son.
