Superb hand colored lithograph depicting a Korean fishermen and his family playing baduk (Go). Drawn by Toioske, printed by Benard and published by Bertrand. Siebold, a German naturalist and physician, was noted for his studies of the natural history, ethnography, and language of Japan, a country then very little known to Europeans. His first voyage to Japan from 1823 to 1830 was as a member of a scientific expedition sent by the Dutch East India Company. Later, he published the results of these studies in Europe, including information on the natural environment, geography, history, customs and arts.
