Pair of interesting copper engravings depicting the early days of manned balloon flight. Plate 1 includes several illustrations of early flying machines including the Montgolfier brothers’ successful manned ascent at Versailles in 1783, Francesco Lana Terzi's concept of a lighter-than-air vehicle from more than a century earlier, Charles and Robert's first hydrogen balloon, Blanchard's hydrogen balloon with flapping devices to control its flight, and the first successful parachute descent from a balloon made by Frenchman André Jacques Garnerin. Plate 2 is a colorful plate showing different configurations.
