This newly bound pamphlet contains an early depiction of the Republic of Texas. The map, on page 8, is a simple rendering of Texas entitled "Sketch of a part of the boundary between Mexico and the United States…" The map shows the Rio Roxo or Red River of Natchitoches, the Sabine River (and S. Lake), Calcasiu River, R. Neches, and the Mississippi River. It locates the settlements of Natchitoches and Nacogdoches, and the "Boundary with the United States by Treaty Feb. 1819." This edition is the bilingual version that contains the original text in Spanish with a translation in English. It contains correspondence related to the Mexican government's displeasure with the occupation of northeast Texas by U.S. Army General Gaines. The general was primarily acting on Stephen Austin's request for help in quelling Indian raids while the new Texas government was organizing. This action took place under a U.S. promise not to interfere in the affairs of Texas and during the negotiations of treaty limits with Mexico. This resulted in Mexico breaking off all diplomatic relations with the U.S., lasting until 1839. A most historical and desirable map and document. 120 pages. 8vo. Beautifully rebound in marbled boards with green cloth spine and corners. Title in gilt along front of spine.
