This map illustrates the Battle of Plataea, the final major battle of the Greco-Persian Wars in southern Greece. It took place in 479 BC between an alliance of Greek city-states under Pausanias against a grand Persian army under Mardonius, who was killed in the battle. Bocage cataloged the D'Anville collection in the Bibliotheque Nationale and based this map on the famous cartographer's work. It was published in an imaginary travel journal by Jean Jacques Barthelemy, a historical fiction set in ancient Greece with a title that translates to The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece.
