This interesting satirical engraving is from the Dutch book of engravings, poems and plays published just after the great speculative financial bubble and crash of 1720. There were three bubbles that all crashed in September of 1720: the South Sea Bubble, named after the British South Sea Company; the Mississippi Bubble, after the Mississippi Company in France; and the Dutch "Wind-Handel" or "Wind-Negotie" (both meaning Wind-Trade). This engraving titled, "New Year's Gift," is dedicated to Pecunia, goddess of money.
