Viewed from what is now the city's Necropolis (cemetery), Glasgow is dominated on the right by its cathedral and the Bishop's Castle. The spires on the left in the distance belong to the Tron Church, the Old College of Glasgow University, Blackfriars Church and the Tolbooth. The man and his dog in the foreground are crossing Molendinar Burn, and other figures on the road are heading to and from the area known as Drygate. John Slezer's Theatrum Scotiae is an important record of Scottish towns, castles and palaces in the 17th century. For most of these places, it contains some of the earliest views that survive.
