This scene depicts both the lithography and intaglio printing processes used during the 19th century. At left, a man begins the lithography process by preparing the stone. At center, another man rolls ink onto the stone while a boy begins to turn a large wooden wheel that will press the paper onto the image. The right half of the scene shows the intaglio printing process, with a man blotting ink onto an engraved copper plate. Beside him another man cranks the press to compress the paper onto the plate.
