This fascinating engraving of a Buddhist temple in Japan depicts a funeral procession for two ambassadors leading up to a large Buddhist statue (Daibutsu). The procession walks between two frightening statues (horrible shapes) and the scene is filled with religious iconography. A key in both Dutch and English is at bottom. This engraving was published in Arnold Montanus' influential early account of the 17th Century Dutch embassies to Japan, first published in Amsterdam in 1669
