This splendid bird's-eye plan of Boston includes insets of South Boston and East Boston. There is tremendous detail of the city streets, buildings, wards, and harbor, at a scale of 500 feet per inch. A key identifies places of worship, public schools, public buildings, boundaries of fire districts, and signal stations. Concentric circles are included to show the distance from city hall to various locations, shown in 1/4 mile increments. The map was prepared by James Slade, City Engineer, under the direction of Otis Clapp, Alderman, William W. Clapp, Jr., and Justin Jones. Otis Clapp was the founder of a small retail pharmacy in Boston that has become the largest manufacturer of pharmaceuticals for industry in the US. Drawn by H. M. Wightman and engraved by C. A. Swett.
