This map of Japan is based on the Blancus/Moreira type, which Sanson included in his small atlas of Asia until 1662, when it was replaced with a newly engraved map based on the Dudley/Jansson model. Sanson acknowledges the work of Cardim and German physician Bernardus Varenius in the title cartouche. Embellished with a strapwork cartouche and a drape-style distance scale.
This map was deaccessioned from the Universitat und Landesbibliothek Sachsen-Anhalt in 2010. Documentation is available upon request.

Condition: A
A crisp impression with original outline color and later color in the cartouche. There are library stamps in the top corners of the sheet on verso, confined to the blank margins. There is a faint blue shadow along the centerfold that is caused by our scanner and does not appear on the map itself.
