Oriented with north to the bottom, this map shows Joris van Spilbergen's fleet navigating Magellan's Strait in 1615. The mountainous terrain of the adjacent shorelines of Tierra del Fuego and Chile are well depicted along with sparse vegetation and a few huts. Based on a map of the same name that was published in de Bry's Grandes Voyages. This map appeared in the French translation of Isaac Commelin's compilation of Dutch expeditions, translated by Rene Augustin Constantin De Renneville and published under the title: Recueil des Voyages qui Ont Servi a l'Establissement et aux Progrez de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales Formee dans les Provinces-Unies des Pais-Bas. De Renneville's work included newly engraved maps copied from Commelin.
