This simple and elegantly engraved plan of Canton (or Guangzhou) was published in The Chinese Repository, a periodical for Protestant missionaries in Asia. Published from 1831 to 1851, it was the first journal of note to specifically focus on Sinology. Until 1847, it was edited by Elijah Coleman Bridgman, an early missionary to the region and an important figure in American Sinology. The plan shows roads, buildings, the city walls, the surrounding mountains, and more.
