This 290 page volume was written by Frank Hurley, who accompanied Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton on their Antarctic voyages from 1911-16 as their chief photographer. The narrative is not scientific in nature, but "tried to tell of the wonders we saw; of the dangers we faced; of the glamour of being the first to penetrate the unknown." The volume is filled with 73 full page illustrations of scenes along the journey as well as 2 folding maps - one showing the tracks of the two voyages (7.7 x 8.1") and another showing the path of Shackleton's ill-fated Endurance (11.7 x 12"). Octavo, hardbound in green cloth with gilt titles on front cover and spine.
