This handsome plan of Antwerp provides an excellent view of the city's streets, major buildings, and fortifications. It tracks the city's development over centuries, indicating "augmentations" made under Henry I of Brabant; John III, Duke of Brabant; Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor; Philip II of Spain; and Philip V of Spain. There are ships sailing through the Escaut Riv. (the Scheldt). At top right, there is an inset showing the Marquisate of Antwerp. Cannons and artillery decorate the title cartouche at bottom left. A compass rose orients the north to the left. Engraved by James Basire.
