A nice pair of World War II era maps issued by Greyhound Bus Lines:
A. A Good-Natured Map of the United States Setting Forth the Services of the Greyhound Lines (18.4 x 11.3"). This is a reduced version of a vividly colored map that is filled with charming vignettes and figures. While undated, the map was issued during the 1930s-40s, the heyday of bus transportation in the U.S. The Greyhound bus routes are delineated in bold black with the interconnecting routes in dotted line. Small pictographs highlight the attractions throughout the country and most are accompanied by humorous text including "thar's room in Texas for all of Yurrup and half of Africa, yes suh" and in Nebraska, "no use making a pig of yourself, get out there an' give a lady a chance." There is no artist attribution, but there is a monogram at lower right with a "K" followed by the delta symbol. Self-folding (4.0 x 6.4") with related text and illustrations on verso. Condition: Fine. (A+)
B. Defense Map of America (sheet size 23.5 x 18.0"). This map emphasizes the extensive Greyhound bus network, where "more of America's military camps and bases are served by Greyhound than by any other transportation system." Greyhound lines are delineated in bold red, connecting routes shown in dotted lines, and large military bases and forts are identified. Decorated by a compass rose featuring a Greyhound bus. Self-folding (4.0 x 9.0") with related text and illustrations on verso. Condition: Light wear along the fold lines with a small tear adjacent to the right vertical fold that has been closed on verso with archival tape. (B+)
