This 256-page guide book was written by Charles Nordhoff and published by Harper Brothers. It served as the author's follow-up work to his popular "California for Health, Pleasure, and Residence" published in 1872. Approximately half of the narrative guide relates to Hawaii, 20 pages to the Columbia River and Puget Sound, and the remainder deals with northern California. The 30-page appendix entitled "Contributions of a Venerable Savage to the Ancient History of the Hawaiian Islands" was translated from the French by William Brigham. The volume includes a frontispiece single-page map of the Hawaiian Islands, a single-page map of northern California, and numerous woodcut illustrations throughout the text. Octavo, hardbound in maroon cloth with gilt title on front cover and spine.
