Vincenzo Coronelli was Italy's most esteemed cartographer and globe-maker. A member of the Franciscan order, he also founded the society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. Coronelli's Atlante Veneto, a compendium of geographical and scientific knowledge in twelve massive volumes, included this magnificent map. This graphic map of the Old World is dedicated to Jacobo Marcello. The map is based on classical geography, covering Europe, most of Africa, and part of Asia. The signs of the zodiac, climatic zones, and other types of information form rings around the map, which is then set in a boldly engraved background with the dedication cartouche and the Venetian coat of arms.
