This handsome map of southern Italy is a fine example of Homann's cartographic style with incredible detail throughout the countryside and large graphic cartouches. Locates hundreds of villages and many cities, included fortified ones. The title cartouche features a ferocious sea monster about to devour a stranded maiden with a knight riding Pegasus across the sky to her salvation. The distance scale features a scene showing Mount Vesuvius erupting, putti, and the royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Naples.

A sharp impression on a bright sheet with a large elephant watermark, contemporary outline color in the map and later color in the cartouches. There is light toning along the edges of the sheet and a 2" tear at top right that has been archivally repaired.
