This lot features two World War II propaganda prints from the Senso Sakusen Kirokuga (War Campaign Documentary Painting) series. The first print shows an exploding battleship while a Japanese sailor looks on from a partially surfaced submarine. The second view depicts the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, with the Battleship Row prominently depicted adjacent to Ford Island. Both prints have Japanese text adjacent to the images.
The Japanese Army and Navy commissioned noted Japanese artists to portray colorful and dramatic war victories for domestic consumption.
