This is the fourth volume of the short-lived Literary Magazine (1803-07), published in Philadelphia by J. Conrad & Co. It contains six monthly issues (July - December 1805), including an announcement in the September issue of the expedition and expectation that the explorers would locate a river by which they would descend to the Pacific via an all-water route (which proved not to be possible): “Mr. Jefferson has set on foot a journey, the object of which is to explore the river Missouri…then to visit the nearest river situated to the west, and to descend thence to the Pacific Ocean…” The article erroneously notes that the party consisted of 12 people, when the actual number was over 40. 480 pages with title page at the end of the volume before the index. Octavo, hardbound in quarter leather with tips over marbled boards.
