This mammoth volume by W.H.L. Corran contains over 1,000 pages detailing all aspects of the city including the local government and its officials, churches, societies, schools, cemeteries, etc. The compilation of individual listings includes addresses and occupations for most entries. In addition, a business index lists vendors by category, including 5 mapmakers. A separate Pasadena section begins on p. 891. Illustrations of note include a folding view of Santa Clara College, the first college in California, a view of Mt. Shasta, and a two-sided colored advertisement for wagons by the A.W. Sanborn & Co. Numerous other advertisements are interspersed within the text. 1,077 pages. Octavo, hardbound in quarter leather over cloth boards.
The completeness of information in the directory provides a remarkable snapshot of a vibrant Los Angeles in 1888 when its population was less than 50,000.
