This fabulously detailed view depicts Dantzig (Gdansk), the primary seaport for the Kingdom of Poland. It was originally published in Pieter Hendricksz. Schut's Afbeeldinghe der Voornaemste Steden van Europa in 1658. It captures the city from the vantage of a hill, with a bustling road in the foreground showing figures entering and leaving town. There is remarkable detail of the city's architecture and fortifications, especially for a view of its size. Sailing ships in the Baltic are visible in the distance. The view is surrounded by a beautiful decorative border incorporating the title cartouche, embellished with fruits, leaves and flowers. Schut and Visscher are credited as maker and publisher, respectively.
