This lot collects five maps of the Mid-Atlantic states from a variety of 19th-century geography books and atlases.
A. Map of the Middle States with Maryland & Virginia, by H. Cowperthwait and Co., from The Common-School Geography... published 1868 (9.1 x 10.8"). Condition: A hint of toning, otherwise fine. (A)
B. Map of the Middle States to Illustrate Olney's School Geography, by Jesse Olney, from A New and Improved School Atlas, circa 1837 (10.0 x 16.6"). Condition: Contemporary color with light offsetting and soiling. (B+)
C. No. 11 Map of the Middle States and Part of the Southern. Engraved to Illustrate Mitchells, School and Family Geography, by Mitchell/Young, from Mitchell's School and Family Geography, dated 1839 (10.6 x 16.9"). Condition: Contemporary color on a moderately toned sheet with soiling and dampstains. (B)
D. No. 11 Map of the Middle States and Part of the Southern. Engraved to Illustrate Mitchells, School and Family Geography, by Mitchell/Young, from Mitchell's School and Family Geography, dated 1858 (10.6 x 17.0"). Condition: Contemporary color on a toned sheet with light spots, an archivally repaired tear that enters the map image at left, and a chip in the right blank margin that has been partially repaired on recto. E. Middle States, by Samuel Griswold Goodrich, circa 1845 (4.4 x 6.2"). Engraved by G.W. Boynton. State population figures date this to circa 1845. Condition: Toned and soiled with a small, faint stain at top left. (B)
