This scarce view of Inverness was published in John Slezer's Theatrum Scotiae, an important record of Scottish towns, castles, and palaces in the 17th century. The collection contains some of the earliest surviving views for many of the locations depicted. The engraving of Inverness depicts Old High St. Stephen's, the castle, the River Ness, and the surrounding hills and countryside. In the foreground, there are farmers working and other figures taking the road into town. This example has been trimmed close to the neatline, excising the title, and mounted onto an archival matboard.
