This unusual cloth map was designed by the General Drafting Company and sponsored by the Esso Oil Company. One side contains a large map of the greater New York region (24.4 x 23.3”) showing the road network and is surrounded by large illustrations of several landmarks including the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the U.N. building. The other side contains additional maps of Lower Manhattan and the rapid transit system, some text, and an index to streets and points of interest. The printing was accomplished via the “Glo-vure Process. Pat pending. A. Langseth-Christensen creation.” The resulting product is very soft and silk-like and was likely intended as a scarf. We found three other examples on OCLC were it was also described as “possibly intended to be worn as a scarf.”

Condition: B+
There is some scattered foxing, a few small stains at top and bottom, and old fold lines. Overall very good condition considering its intended use.
