This attractive tinted lithograph was produced by George Hayward and featured in Valentine's Manual for 1849. It is a later, much smaller variant of William Burgis' six foot wide view of the city first published in 1717 and entitled "A South Prospect of the Flourishing City of New York in ye Province of New York in America.” This view was taken from Brooklyn Heights and captures the bustling waterfront of the East River with Manhattan in the background. Text beneath the view describes the area's history and 24 important sites are identified including Fort Amsterdam (#1), Chapel (#2), and Great Dock (#4) to name a few. A similar reduced view was produced by the London Magazine in 1761.
