A. Chili, Getrokken uit Alfonso de Oualle, Jesuit, en in Dertien Rechts-Gebieden Verdeelt, by Nicolas Sanson, from Algemeene Weereld-Beschryving…, published 1705 (7.4 x 10.6"). Fine small version of Sanson's important map of Chili showing the Cuyo provinces. The map is based on the descriptions of Chilean-born Jesuit Alfonso de Ovalle, and is completed by a graceful title cartouche.

Sanson's small maps from his L'Amerique en Plusieurs Cartes..., first published in 1657 and engraved by A. Peyrounin, were copied several times by various map publishers. Johann David Zunners made copies of Sanson's maps for his German translation of Die Gantze Erd-Kugel in 1679. Johannes Ribbius and Simon de Vries published copies in 1682 and 1683, with new maps engraved by Antoine d'Winter. The plates were later sold to Francois Halma, who used them in 1699 and then again in 1705 with the titles re-engraved in Dutch. The titles on the d'Winter plates were re-engraved back into French, and then used by Nicholas Chemereau in 1715 and by Henri du Sauzet in 1738. Condition: On watermarked paper with light dampstaining and foxing that is only visible in the blank margins.

B. A Chart of the South Sea Coast from the Steights of Magellan to Arica, by Herman Moll, circa 1719 (11.4 x 7.0"). This fine map of the Chilean coast stretches from Arica south to the Strait of Magellan. Several place names appear along the coast. Major cities such as Santiago, Concepcion, and Valdivia are identified, and Vulcano d Chillan is located. A compass rose orients the north to the left. Page 449. V2 appears at top left. Engraved in Moll's unmistakable style. Condition: A nice impression on a faintly toned sheet with an "RW" watermark.
