This great pre-Mexican War map shows Mexico in control of the Southwest and California while the independent Republic of Texas is shown in its large stovepipe configuration. Above Texas is a huge unnamed region stretching to Canada and bounded to the east and west by Iowa Territory and Oregon. Iowa Territory is in its largest configuration, while the disputed Oregon Country takes in the entire Northwest and extends well into Canada. The Oregon boundary issue between the United States and Canada would be settled in 1846, shortly after the publication of this map. An inset map of Great Britain is drawn on the same scale to give the British viewer a perspective on the enormity of the United States. James Wyld was the successor to William Faden.
