This striking view of San Francisco was published in the November 7, 1868 edition of The Illlustrated London News. Although it is a fairly idyllic scene, it is accompanied by an article chronicling "the most terrible quake" (starting on sheet's verso), referring to the 1868 Hayward earthquake, which occurred on October 21, 1868. It was known as the "Great San Francisco earthquake" before the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire usurped that title. The engraving shows the city from the vantage of the bay with several steam and sailing ships in the foreground.

A nice impression on a bright sheet with a "Maker 1868" watermark.
