This uncommon map details the coast of present-day Venezuela and the Windward Islands. The pictorial title cartouche features Alonso de Ojeda's attack on Cartagena. Ojeda was a Spanish navigator and conquistador, who travelled to the Caribbean and northern South America with Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Ojeda is famous for having named Venezuela and for having been the first European to visit Guyana, Colombia, and Lake Maracaibo. Published in van der Aa's compilation of early voyages of exploration. Surrounded by a decorative picture frame border from a separate plate, with an alternate French title below the map's neatline: Terre Ferme de Cheribichi, Visitee Depuis l'Ile Cubagua par Don Alonzo d'Ojeda...
