A. Map of the Permanent System of Highways District of Columbia Prepared in the Office of the Engineer Commissioner D.C., by U.S. Government, from Senate Doc. No. 441; 62d Cong., 2d Sess., dated 1912, hand color (53.3 x 43.3"). This mammoth map was issued on two sheets and joined together. It presents the street-grid pattern of the city in fine detail with many important buildings identified including the Washington Monument, Smithsonian, Executive Mansion, Capitol, Naval Observatory, and many more. The map extends across the Potomac River to include Rosslyn, Arlington and the National Cemetery, and also names several new subdivisions including Chevy Chase, Woodley Park and Cleveland Park. A color-coded legend at bottom identifies 9 different railroads and street car lines, while a smaller legend at bottom left identifies existing and proposed highways. Condition: Issued folding with light toning along the fold lines, minor offsetting, and a few short splits at the fold junctions. (B+)

B. Washington and Vicinity, by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), dated 1944, printed color (42.6 x 47.0"). This large topographical map of the Washington D.C. region extends from Rockville south to Alexandria with incredible detail in between. Many individual buildings are shown downtown including the White House, Capitol, Washington Monument, Union Station, and the recently completed Pentagon building across the Potomac River. Surveying work for this map took place in 1913-15 and was revised in 1941-42. Much of the land outside of the District is rural at this time, though this would quickly change following the conclusion of World War II. Condition: Clean and colorful with one short edge tear in the bottom blank margin. Issued folding. (A)
