This map of Barsoom was created by William Hewison and is based on the works of early science-fiction writers, including Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur G. Clarke, Charles Chilton, Ray Bradbury and Herbert George Wells. This fictionalized representation of Mars depicts interesting Martian creatures popularized by Burroughs, such as Green Men, wild Throats, Silians, Banths, and Plant Men. Mars' two moons, Phobos and Diemos, are depicted in the top corners of the map, and an astronaut and a Green Man fill the bottom corners. The map was created to accompany an article on "Space for Beginners" that was partly factual and partly humorous. The map is on half of a folio sheet that also includes a large cartoon titled "For 11-Plus Candidates" and six captioned cartoons related to "The Etiquette of Space Travel." Published in Punch, a British satirical periodical that was issued between 1841-1992 and was known for its political cartoons, humorous and witty writing, and commentary on social justice. William Hewison (1925-2002) was a British illustrator and cartoonist who was a frequent contributor to Punch and also served as its Art Editor for 24 years.
