This evocative view of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe was published as part of Armand Budan's La Guadeloupe Pittoresque, a series of 12 plates of the island that were released on a subscription model to eventually be bound together in a volume with descriptive text. Complete editions are exceedingly rare. The lithograph depicts the seaside city against a backdrop of mountains. It was drawn on stone by Emile Vernier after a drawing by Budan. Armand Budan (1827-74) was born on Guadeloupe and became a painter and one of the first photographers to work in the Antilles. Printed by Lemercier.
