This is a rare view of Derbent from Schenk's important town atlas. Located on the Caspian Sea, Derbent is the southern-most city in Russia, and claims to be the oldest city in Russia. The Latin title at bottom mentions the legendary Gates of Alexander, a barrier supposedly built by Alexander the Great in the Caucasus to keep the uncivilized barbarians of the north from invading the land to the south.
