This is a terrific set of stylized and very colorful maps by the Mexican painter, illustrator, filmmaker and anthropologist Covarrubias (1904-1957) who was referred to as Mexico's Renaissance Man. He painted six wall sized maps titled "Pageant of the Pacific" for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. This portfolio of six lithographed plates are after the paintings and are copyrighted by the San Francisco Bay Exposition Company, published by Pacific House. Each map has a plate number, the pageant title, plus a separate title within the map. The first four are sized 34" x 21.5" and the last two are 22" x 14". The maps are printed on fine quality paper and include the following: 1) Peoples of the Pacific, 2)The Flora and Fauna of the Pacific, 3) Art Forms of the Pacific Area, 4) Economy of the Pacific, 5) Native Dwellings of the Pacific Area, and 6) Native Means of Transportation in the Pacific Area. Each map has been carefully encapsulated in archival Mylar. Complete with original paper cover descriptive booklet, 24pp., and the hardboard portfolio case (20" x 26") with Polynesian motif and twisted hemp ties. A complete and rarely seen issue that we find in several museums.
