Striking view of the city from the sea with various types of ships and boats in the foreground. The fortified city is built into a hillside, rising dramatically above the bay, with two large castles at the pinnacle. This scene illustrates an event in the life (1633) of Lord Michiel de Ruyter, the Dutch admiral who was sent to make a treaty with the Emir of Algiers, whose notorious Barbary Pirates were disrupting the trade of the Dutch East India Company. De Ruyter's mission was successful, partially due to the presence of his large fleet of war ships. Title in banner at top. Lovely crown watermark in paper.
