Stunning hand colored aquatint plates based on the paintings of several important 19th century artists, including George Catlin. These are from Prichard's early anthropological study, subtitled "comprising inquiries into the modifying influence of physical and moral agencies on the different tribes of the human family."

Plate XXXV Mah-to-toh-pa (The Four Bears) 2nd Chief of the Mandans; Plate XXXIX Sha-ko-k. (The Mint) A Mandan girl; Plate XXXIV Mi-neek-ee-sunk-te-ka (The Mink) A Mandan Girl. Three very fine portraits with great illustration of the women's fancy beadwork and the chief's bold war paint. Four Bears was one of the most respected Indians on the Upper Missouri River.
