This is the first state of this very handsome map, dated 1595, but published in 1612. Covers the eastern Mediterranean from Italy eastward into Phoenicia. The map depicts the adventures of Aenaeas' fleet of twenty ships as he roamed the seas for seven years following the destruction of Rome and as most extensively described in the writings of Virgilius. In the end, only seven ships survived as shown on the lower right portion of the map. Three decorative strapwork cartouches.

Beautiful impression and coloring with wide margins. Faint staining at top margin into center cartouche, but not distracting. Old paper repair on verso not evident from front.
