Robert Dudley was the first Englishman to produce a sea atlas, Dell Arcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea). The atlas was only issued in two editions and the maps are rarely seen on the market. This beautiful example is crisply engraved in the sparse Florentine style with superb calligraphy throughout. The map covers the islands in the South Atlantic centering on St. Helena. Sailing ships, compass rose and title cartouche embellish the chart. Two folio sheets are joined to make up this large map.
